Animated short film Jazz Fool Around
Produced by the Armenian studio ArtStep, Jazz Fool Around is part of the Music Collection series. From its very first moments, the film immerses viewers in a fantastic jazz world. On screen, there is passion, jealousy, and rivalry — but all of it is playful, a kind of musical battle. The musicians challenge each other, showing off their improvisational skill. As the playful chaos winds down and the concert comes to an end, the musicians receive applause and cheers from the audience, and a unique melody is born on stage.
A spectacular performance that looks like “fooling around”
At the heart of this musical battle stands a striking figure: a woman in red. On stage, she plays alongside five male musicians. Her presence adds passion, drama, and rhythm. She is a symbol of rhythm and desire, both muse and catalyst, igniting the music and life itself.
The woman in red plays a key role in driving the story
The film’s visual style is just as bold as its narrative. Every time the musicians invent new rhythms and phrases, unexpected objects and characters appear on screen — crabs, cars, frogs, comic frames. Everything emerges suddenly, illogically, eccentrically — just like the music itself. The blending of different visual styles became a way of expressing the essence of jazz: freedom, imagination, and the joy of improvisation.
The film’s visual style is a bold mix of different elements
One of the most remarkable moments comes at the very end, when live-action footage of real jazz musicians is placed side by side with their animated counterparts. It is as if the curtain is finally lifted, revealing that behind the virtual images stand real jazz masters — renowned Armenian and Russian musicians. This scene unites reality and fantasy, emphasizing that at the heart of animation there is living music. Filming with live musicians and recording the music took just one day, but it was the hardest part. The musicians were brilliant jazz players, but not actors. They had to perform on their instruments and, at the same time, exaggerate their acting. Any mistake meant starting over, because jazz is pure improvisation — you cannot resume it “from the middle.” By the end of the day, the team had more than 30 versions of completely different, original music — each unique, each beautiful. Choosing the best take was yet another challenge.
The ending delivers a surprising touch, blurring the line between reality and animation
Since its release, the film has been warmly embraced by audiences. It became a favorite at jazz festivals, with many opening their programs with it. It energizes and lifts the mood. Surprisingly, it also found fans at scientific conferences: during breaks, scholars relaxed with its cheerful story and music. The film traveled to festivals, spreading smiles and applause — and that has been the most precious response of all.
Jazz Fool Around is not only a tribute to jazz, it also has one important mission: to give pleasure, to capture that fleeting moment when music and image merge into a celebration.
